Matt Turney Interview

Mr. Turney, tell us a little about who you are and where you are from.
I'm an artist and graphic designer living near San Diego, CA. I grew up on the border of Portland and Beaverton, minutes away from two giants in the footwear industries. A lot of my early influences which I am still reminded of today, came from where I lived and what I grew up enjoying. There were those infamous 80's toys and cartoons like GiJoe, Transformers and He-man, illustrated Air Jordan t-shirts, Image and Marvel comic books, Beckett sports card magazines, and I can't forget all of those great shoe designs from the early 90’s!

What is BNI's mission statement?
Brand New Intention. Furthering the progression of art by helping artists turn passion into prosperity.

What inspired you to start Brand New Intention?
As an artist I have always had a strong urge to be create: drawings, paintings, products, etc. Early in my career I had the chance to be around insanely talented artists like: Shepard Fairey, Andy Howell, and Dave Kinsey. I was inspired to see that they could make a good living working for clients during the day, and also fit in time to create and market their own artistic and entrepreneurial endeavors in the off time. As a young artist I saw potential in myself to be successful like my mentors before me. I came to realize that my passion for art, goes beyond being successful and is to do my part to see that art is always progressing. With that said, I created Brand New Intention as a place to empower artists such as myself to contribute to the progression of art by helping to fund future creative endeavors.

Lastly, what can we look forward to in the future from BNI?
More connections with artists and designers using new mediums on different types of product and canvas. Depending on the success of Brand New Intention, I hope to fund bigger and more visible projects out in the cities and communities.
